Priced like a tool, not a platform.
The CLI is MIT-licensed and free on one machine, tunnel included. The only thing that costs us money is relayed bytes, so that is the only thing we meter — and traffic that stays on your own network is never counted at all.
Every limit below is enforced from one table in the source, packages/config/src/plans.ts. If this page and that file ever disagree, the file wins.

accounts
What an account is actually for.
Nothing here is a gate. Pairing, the tunnel and every session work exactly the same signed out — this is the part that only works when the machines are on a list.
Ask to join from the browser
Pick a machine from your dashboard instead of hunting for a fresh code. The machine still decides: whoever is there runs mtmux approve, and you read back six digits to confirm it's you.
Every machine in one list
With a live dot, so “online” means something — each machine checks in every 30 seconds. The same list mtmux servers prints in a terminal.
More than one machine
Free registers one. Pro registers as many as you like and lets you name them something other than their hostname.
A 7-day Pro trial, by itself
It starts the first time Free isn't enough — not from a button, and never with a card. If you never hit a limit, it never starts.
What doesn't change: mtmux still needs no account to pair, the tunnel is still end-to-end encrypted so our broker cannot read a byte of it, and local mode still contacts nothing of ours at all. Signing out puts you back exactly where you were.
Line by line
| Plan feature | Free | Pro |
|---|---|---|
| Registered servers | 1 | unlimited |
| Trusted devices per server | 3 | unlimited |
| Relayed traffic per month | 5 GB | 200 GB |
| Local & LAN traffic | unmetered | unmetered |
| Sessions, windows, panes | unlimited | unlimited |
| Encrypted tunnel | Included | Included |
| Named servers | hostname only | Included |
| Self-hosted broker | Included | Included |
Local and LAN traffic never reaches our infrastructure, so it is not metered on any plan and never can be. Relayed traffic is bytes carried through the broker on your behalf — which is the one thing that costs us money to provide.
Billing questions
What counts as a server?
One machine running mtmux and registered to your account. A laptop, a workstation, an EC2 box — each is one server, however many tmux sessions it hosts.
Does the free tier expire?
No. Free is free indefinitely on one server, and the encrypted tunnel is included rather than held back as the upsell. We would rather you upgrade because you bought a second machine.
Is there a trial?
Yes, and you don't start it. The first time a Free account is refused something Pro allows — a second machine, usually — a 7-day Pro trial begins on the spot. No card, no button, and if you never hit a limit it never starts.
What happens if I go over 5 GB in a month?
The relayed path is what stops; your own network is not affected, because it never went through us. Local and LAN access keep working exactly as before, and the counter resets with the calendar month.
Can I use mtmux without paying and without an account?
Yes. An account is only needed to register more than one server or to open a dashboard. Without one you still get the CLI, the tunnel and local mode — tmux in a browser, on your own machine, for nothing.
Who processes payments?
Dodo Payments. Card details never reach our servers, and the prices Dodo shows at checkout are the authoritative ones.
Refunds?
Ask within 30 days and we refund, no questions. Cancel any time; you keep Pro until the period ends, then fall back to Free.
